Online Freelancer Training Toolkit
for Gig Workers

Online Freelancer Training opens new pathways to digital work

All you need to know about our impactful Online Freelancer Training that prepares individuals to succeed in the digital economy and the new world of work.

Across the globe, the world of work is changing rapidly. Traditional jobs with fixed hours and secure contracts are giving way to more flexible, task-based work. Much of this new work happens online, mediated through platforms and apps that connect people who want to work with those who need a task done—also known as the gig economy.

For many, especially in regions with high youth unemployment or limited access to formal jobs, this change brings opportunity. In places such as Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, more young people and women are turning to online freelancing to earn an income, often from home or shared community spaces. Yet, this digital shift is not without challenges. It brings new risks, such as unstable incomes, lack of job security, and danger of exploitation if not navigated correctly.

Our experience implementing Online Freelancer Training (OFT) programmes has proved that it equips online freelancers with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. Based off real-life experiences of successful freelancers it focuses on essential skills, platform awareness, and fair work principles. It aims to do so through a gender-responsive lens, recognising that women often face additional barriers in accessing digital work and must be supported accordingly.

The OFT Toolkit was born from the repeated success of implementations in Ghana, Kenya and India. With the idea that the toolkit should support organisations and trainers working at the intersection of digital employment and skills to replicate the programme to their specific contexts.

  • The OFT Toolkit is a practical guide developed from the Gig Economy Project’s experience implementing Online Freelancer Training programmes across Africa and Asia. Developed in collaboration with 21CC Education, it is designed for implementing agencies, education providers, training institutions, NGOs, and innovation hubs that want to strengthen participation in the gig economy by making online freelancing training accessible and impactful.

The toolkit brings together key lessons, practical tools, and adaptable templates in one place, making it easier for organisations and training institutions to design and run their own programmes. It is built to be flexible, locally relevant, and reflective, while also encouraging knowledge sharing across geographies.

The toolkit includes voices from the field, stories and insights that provide real-life examples of its application and highlight the relevance of inclusion and upskilling in digital work.

I used to believe freelancing was only for website designers and digital designers, but I’ve come to see how vast it is for everyone with the right mindset to tap into it.
