Artificial Intelligence for the SDGs: Hamburg Declaration Shows First Results
One year after its launch at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, the endorsers of the ‘Hamburg Declaration on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ have achieved significant breakthroughs in leveraging AI for sustainable development.
The newly released Implementation Snapshot 2026 highlights the tangible progress made by the Declaration’s growing community of partners. Milestones reported by the endorsers include:
- 256,000+ people trained in AI skills
- 270,000 children reached in AI-powered vaccination campaign
- Open-source models for 61 African languages deployed
Launched in 2025, the Hamburg Declaration established a shared vision: ensuring that AI advances sustainable development in an inclusive, equitable, and responsible manner, while actively mitigating its risks. Today, nearly 60 partners – a growing coalition of governments, international and regional organisations, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society organisations – are actively contributing to realising the vision of the Declaration.
Over the past year, endorsers have offered AI skills trainings in countries of the Global South, strengthened AI governance, created open-source models and data sets, supported innovators, and deployed concrete AI solutions in areas such as health, education, agriculture, climate action, and justice. These efforts are only the beginning, with implementation continuing to scale impact and deliver sustainable results.
The Implementation Snapshot 2026 represents the first stock-taking exercise on the progress made. It also highlights lessons learned, challenges and promising approaches for scaling identified by the endorsers.
