At a glance

Mexico is a strategic partner of the German development cooperation in many international initiatives. Additionally, Mexico serves as a bridge between countries in North America and Latin America. Since the establishment of the first North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, which has now been updated by the USMCA, Mexico has been an important global business location. Approximately 2,000 German companies are active in Mexico.
However, Mexico is also marked by strong social inequalities. According to the Mexican statistics institute INEGI, over 40% of Mexicans live in poverty – many of them are employed in the informal sector.

Digitalisation already plays an important role in the industry and will continue to do so in the future. The future competitiveness of the economy will be increasingly measured by the adaptability of companies to digitalisation. This poses a considerable challenge for many firms, especially for small and medium enterprises (SME). Supporting SME in embracing digitalisation and recognising its potential is therefore one of the goals of the Digital Transformation Center Mexico. Promoting innovation and digital entrepreneurship is also a priority of the Mexican Ministry of Economy, which implies that the Digital Transformation Center can make a complementary contribution to this.

At the same time, it is important to ensure that the digital transformation of the economy and society takes place in a sustainable way. The benefits of digitalisation should contribute to building a greener and more sustainable economy. Here, the opportunities offered by digitalisation to strengthen climate protection should be identified. Efficient production processes, big data or even artificial intelligence provide numerous solutions for saving resources.

Our approach

The Digital Transformation Center Mexico aims to tackle these challenges in close cooperation with partners from politics, society and business. First concrete activities will focus on the nexus between climate change and digitalisation, intending to foster sustainable and green economic development by leveraging the benefits of innovative digital technologies.
