What is open finance and what should countries consider before adopting it? These questions were explored during a 2-day workshop for the East African Community—EAC held in Mombasa, Kenya, from 25 to 26 February. Hosted by the EAC Secretariat, the workshop brought together representatives from the eight EAC Partner States and forms part of ongoing efforts to support implementation of the EAC Payment Systems Masterplan.

Through discussions and breakout sessions, participants explored how open finance could strengthen interoperability, promote innovation and financial inclusion. Fireside sessions featuring Rwanda, Kenya and Ghana provided practical insights and lessons learned, enabling peer learning among regulators.

The workshop marked an important step toward continued dialogue and cooperation on digital financial services in the region. It was organised by the GIZ Data Economy Project and the Estonian Centre for International Development—ESTDEV as part of the Data Governance in Africa Team Europe Initiative.
