AI for Africa Conference 2025

AI for Africa: Advancing Inclusive Innovation, strengthening Africa-EU ties, under South Africa’s G20 Presidency

Under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Sustainable Development placed AI at the heart of global efforts to drive innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth. While AI could add up to US $2.9 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2030, the continent currently captures just 2.5% of the global AI market and a mere 0.3% of projected worldwide investment — highlighting the urgency to bridge this divide. This presents an opportunity for development cooperation to fill the gap.

Supported by UNESCO, the South African government hosted the AI for Africa Conference in Cape Town (30 September – 1 October), convening senior policymakers, development institutions, and high-level global partners to accelerate the African Union’s digital transformation agenda. Central to the discussions were the mobilisation of technical and financial resources to strengthen AI infrastructure, capacity, and policy frameworks across the continent.

Germany, represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) thorugh Mr. Wolfger Bungarten (Unit 110), noted with interest the feedback during the high-level sessions, reaffirming Germany’s commitment to inclusive digital transformation in Africa. The BMZ welcomed the conference outcomes and expressed strong interest in the formal commitments made by G20 members to promote equitable AI development.

During bilateral discussions with Deputy Direct General of South Africa Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, key areas of collaboration were underscored — notably digital sovereignty, the use of AI in public administration, and the advancement of AI in local South African languages. The DDG acknowledged the value of ongoing cooperation under GIZ programmes funded by BMZ, which continue to play a vital role in strengthening Africa’s AI ecosystem.

Germany remains one of South Africa’s most significant strategic partners and a leading supporter of the Africa-EU partnership. Through BMZ, Germany continues to champion just transition, sustainable economic development, and inclusive and responsible digital transformation — ensuring that Africa’s digital future is co-created, equitable, and globally competitive.
