Start-ups in Africa specialising in digital and green technologies are combating climate change with bold ideas. The ‘Digital and Green Innovation Accelerator’ (DGIx) provides customised technical assistance, connections, and hands-on support. A recent exchange in Tallinn, Estonia, shows how effective this can be.
Across Africa, a new generation of digital and green innovators is tackling pressing climate challenges by creating innovative digital solutions. From streamlining the collection of recyclable waste to tracing honey supply chains—the ideas are vast. Yet, the journey from idea to impact is rarely straightforward. Fragmented ecosystems, limited access to investment, and policy barriers often slow down progress.
The Digital and Green Innovation Accelerator (DGIx), as part of the Digital and Green Innovation Action, is committed to bridging this gap and supporting innovators as they navigate this journey. By partnering with local entrepreneurs and ecosystem actors, DGIx helps build capacity, foster cross-border collaboration, and provide access to resources.

Learning to scale—together
At the end of May 2025, four DGIx innovators travelled to Tallinn, Estonia, for a week of learning, networking, and strategic development. Their mission: to strengthen investment readiness, refine their growth strategies, and build lasting connections with peers and partners worldwide.
A particular highlight was the “Scale Up by Strategy Tools” simulation—a hands-on training designed to demystify venture funding and prepare entrepreneurs for the realities of raising capital. For Benson Abila, co-founder of the Kenyan social waste management company M-taka, it was a key experience:
The Scale-Up Workshop was my highlight. Learning from the experts and getting a deep dive into investment, and what it means to prepare for and engage with investors was invaluable.

At events such as Latitude59, the DGIx Stakeholder Launch, and the African Business Forum, the DGIx innovators had the opportunity to engage with policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs. They also led a workshop on how to scale digital and green solutions in Africa. The visit was a great success and once again highlighted that innovation thrives in strong communities.
I learnt something new and was also able to get new ideas on how to restructure our organisation. Last but not least, it was helpful to build a great network.

From local leadership to global reach
DGIx continues to provide tailored technical assistance, strategic coaching, and investment readiness support. The message is clear: when people come together, locally led innovation can drive sustainable change and compete on the global stage. Because climate resilience and digital transformation go hand in hand from the ground up—just like these solutions, that are already being developed by innovators today.
