Team Europe advances global action to reduce the gender digital divide
Women remain significantly underrepresented in the digital world—only around one in five leadership positions in digital policy is held by a woman. At the same time, closing the digital gender gap could lift around 30 million women out of poverty by 2050.
This is exactly where the new initiative “Women Leadership in the Public ICT Sector” by the European Commission—with the participation of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other European partners—comes in. It aims to reduce these inequalities, promote women’s leadership in public ICT and technology institutions, strengthen STEM skills among girls and young women, and thereby enable their participation in the global digital economy. At the same time, the initiative advances cybersecurity to create safer online spaces for all.
As part of the initiative, the BMZ is implementing activities to promote gender equality in the digital sphere in Cambodia and Tanzania, as well as in Latin America and the Caribbean. These efforts are supported by local digital centers and the EU-LAC Digital Alliance.
